On Tuesday 16 May, 2017, during the European Parliament's plenary session in Strasbourg, a debate on the current political, reform agenda and human rights situation in Moldova was held.

The political attempt to change the electoral law by the Democratic Party of Moldova managed by the oligarch Vlad Plahotniuc, and the lack of real reforms and thus fight against corruption and fraud in the country, attracted the attention of the Members of the European Parliament. Earlier the negotiations on the macro-financial assistance to Moldova, between the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union, were postponed.

The plenary session debate was inter alia the result of a high-level mission "Moldova at the crossroads", organised by the Open Dialog between 3-4 May, 2017 in Brussels.
