The political situation in Kazakhstan was the main subject of the conference organised by the MEP Piotr Borys in the European Parliament in Strasburg on the 17th of January, 2012. The conference was entitled ‘Zhanaozen: from the labour conflict to tragedy. What will be next after the parliamentary election?’. Last Sunday, on the 15th of January, 2012, an early parliamentary election was held in Kazakhstan. According to preliminary results, which were not recognised by the OSCE, Kazakhstan’s ruling Nur Otan Party, headed by the President Nursultan Nazarbaev, won a victory in the election.
The conference was organised jointly with the Open Dialogue Foundation as well as with the MEP Nicole Kiil-Nielsen (the Greens).
