On 29th of November, 2011 in room ASP A1E-2 of the European Parliament, from 10.30 a.m. to 12.30 a.m. there will be held a roundtable “Central Asia: Challenges to Freedom of Expression in Traditional and New Media”. The roundtable is being organised by International Partnership for Human Rights, Netherlands Helsinki Committee and Open Dialogue Foundation, under the auspices of MEP Sonia Alfano.
The roundtable will discuss challenges faced by independent media, both traditional and new ones, in Central Asia. It will also address the issue of repression of journalists and human rights defenders in these countries who use media as a major instrument in their work.
Independent journalists and human rights defenders from the Central Asia region will be present for the discussion.
A short multimedia presentation outlining major human rights and related problems in contemporary Central Asia will be shown. A new briefing paper on censorship and control of the internet and other new communications technologies in Central Asia will also be distributed.
The representatives of Kazakhstan’s Media and civil society will take part in many meetings on November 28-30 to discuss the problem independent media as well as possibilities for cooperation in solving the situations.
