Yehor Sobolev in Poland

Invited by the Open Dialog Foundation and the Institute of National Remembrance, Yehor Sobolev, Head of Ukraine’s Lustration Committee, visited Poland. During his four-day stay (4-7 June) he met with Polish MPs, government officials, journalists and Ukrainians living in Poland.

On Thursday, June 5, Sobolev met with Vladyslav Kanevsky, Charge d’Affaires of the Ukrainian Embassy, Dr. Łukasz Kamiński – President of the Institute of National Remembrance, administration of the Central Anti-Corruption Bureau, and MP Małgorzata Gosiewska. The following day, our guest took some time to talk to the Deputy Prosecutor General, Robert Hernand and attend a press conference at the Ukraiński Świat refugee support centre. In his conversation with the media, Sobolev, recounted the purpose and schedule of his visit, explained about the type of lustration that is expected by Ukrainian society and how it is going to be supported by reforms that are currently being planned.

– We have an idea to recruit people for courts, prosecutors’ offices, special services, police and the entire government from scratch. We are going to hold open competitions so that all submissions are available and known to the general public – said Yehor Sobolev.

The press conference served as an opportunity to present the Memorandum of Cooperation between the Lustration Committee of Ukraine and the Open Dialog Foundation. On the same day Sobolev also met with MPs Michał Szczerba and Marcin Święcicki. On June 7, his final day in Poland, the Head of Ukraine’s Lustration Committee met with members of the Ukrainian community living in Poland.

Yehor Sobolev (born in 1977), Head of Ukraine’s Lustration Committee, elected by the Maidan Council, then informally included in Arseniy Yatsenyuk’s government and introduced to the public during Maidan along with other members of the current cabinet on 26 February 2014 as the head of the newly appointed Lustration Committee of Ukraine. Together with Mustafa Nayem, he was one of the initiators and first leaders of EuroMaidan. He is a member of the Maidan Council. Pedagogue by training, journalist and social activist, in 2008 he set up Svidomo, bureau of investigative journalism.
