On 7th September, Petro Ohotin of the Open Dialogue Foundation met, in Kiev, with Salil Shetty, Secretary General of Amnesty International. Okhotin provided Shetty with reports drafted by the Foundation, monitoring the observance of human rights in Kazakhstan and the situation of Ukrainian activists abducted and transported to the Russian Federation.
Shetty visited Kiev where he met Ukrainian activists and representatives of non-governmental organisations. The meeting was devoted, amongst others, to violations of human rights in the ATO zone and the need to open an independent investigation into the torture and other abuses carried out by the police during the Euromaidan – some of those people have still gone unpunished. Next to Ukraine, discussions centered around threats of torture and extraditions of Kazakh oppositionists, including the case of Mukhtar Ablyazov.
Shetty has led Amnesty International since 2010, and, as its Secretary General, he initiated a process of decentralisation reforms which evoked wide discussions within the organisation.
