The war in Ukraine has moved into a decisive phase. The defenders, in an act of incredible perseverance and courage, are pushing back the invaders from key areas in the east and south of the country. The brave Ukrainians are not only an inspiration to the whole world, but are also repelling an invasion that has threatened the peace of the whole of Europe and, in the first instance, the security of Poland. The coming winter will bring with it additional challenges, representing for many on the frontline the most difficult period of this conflict so far.
Inspired by the Open Dialogue Foundation (ODF), Members of the Polish Parliament from all parties of the democratic opposition have decided to unite and personally donate the most needed equipment and assistance to one of the strategic units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine – the young drone operators from the “Madiara Birds” group, constituting the ‘eyes’ of the army on the hottest section of the southern frontline, near Kherson. This will be the main objective of the #OppositionForUkraine humanitarian mission. Eight MPs from seven opposition parties have already volunteered to participate on behalf of the Polish Sejm. An invitation to the mission has also been extended to right-wing parties, but at the moment we have not received any responses (if we receive any, the name of the mission will be changed accordingly).
As representatives of the people, MPs do not forget the civilians, who have to survive the winter without electricity, water, heating or basic necessities. Hence, on its way to the front, the mission will also stop in newly liberated villages, where we will distribute the most needed humanitarian aid.
However, funding and in-kind donations are needed to make the mission a success. The money raised will finance the purchase of as many reconnaissance drones and other defence equipment for the military as possible, as well as cover the cost of fuel for the convoy. In-kind donations will be given to civilians and military on the front line. You are warmly invited to support the dedicated campaign at www.zrzutka.pl/DronyDlaUkrainy, the auction of ‘souvenirs’ from Russian POWs at https://allegro.pl/uzytkownik/otwartydialog and to donate in-kind gifts (contact: [email protected]). You can also fund the mission by supporting the ODF Ukraine Relief Campaign at: www.zrzutka.pl/PomocUkrainie.
The most needed donations are: generators, winter items (sleeping bags, warm clothing, thermal underwear), food (canned goods, coffee, nuts, energy bars, chocolate), feminine hygiene items, heat/energy sources (heaters, powerbanks, batteries, 18650 type batteries, trench candles) and medical supplies.
The mission will take place in January 2023. For security reasons, the exact dates and route of the convoy will not be disclosed in advance.
