Italian Senator Luigi Compagna filed a written inquiry with the Italian government, regarding political prisoners in Kazakhstan, in particular, the situation of Zinaida Mukhortova.
The Senator inquired whether the Italian government has noted a steadily deteriorating situation with regard to human rights and political prisoners in Kazakhstan. He focused particularly on the case of Ms. Mukhortova, who was forcibly subjected to psychiatric examination. In his letter, Compagna also asked about the manner in which the Italian authorities intend to exert pressure on Kazakhstan and take advantage of the close bilateral relations in order to compel the Asian country to begin to respect human rights.
International NGOs (including ODF) condemn the abuse of Interpol mechanisms, practiced also by Kazakh authorities, to persecute oppositionists abroad, – the senator noted.
