Maciej Wąsik has lost a lawsuit against the Open Dialogue Foundation for violation of personal rights. He was convicted for words he said in 2018. The organisation accused him of, among other things, spreading defamatory statements against it. He will have to publicly apologise to Lyudmyla Kozlovska and Bartosz Kramek on two television stations. In an interview with Interia, he has stated that he disagrees with the court’s ruling.
In 2022 Maciej Wąsik lost in a lawsuit related to violating the personal rights of the Open Dialogue Foundation. The issue was that four years earlier he had accused the Foundation of having links with Russia, engaging in hybrid activities and money laundering.
Maciej Wąsik sentenced. Another court ruling
“Now the Court of Appeal in Warsaw has upheld the verdict of the Regional Court in Warsaw,” the Foundation reported. The verdict is final. The court obliged the politician to pay compensation in the amount of PLN 10,000 with interest to the Open Dialogue Foundation, its founder and President Lyudmyla Kozlovska, and the chair of the Foundation’s Supervisory Board Bartosz Kramek. This step is intended to “compensate for the moral and reputational damage caused by the unjustified accusations”.
The statements that became the subject of the legal dispute were published by, among others, TVP Info, Telewizja Republika and Gazeta Polska, where an apology from Wąsik is now to be published.
The Foundation has stated on X, “The court crushed all the arguments of the defendant M. Wąsik, including, that these were only legitimate opinions, that they were of a social nature or that they were selectively chosen.”. The politician also explained, among other things, his poor financial condition and emphasised that Kramek had insulted him in one of his posts.
Maciej Wąsik: I disagree with the verdict
Bartosz Kramek explained after hearing the verdict that the court of first instance had already found that Maciej Wąsik had used defamation in the political interest of his own party.
“During the previous court hearings, he tried to soften the tone of his words and hid behind claims of forgetfulness. Earlier, he had referred to secret documents of the Internal Security Agency and supported the “pasquinade” revelations of the pro-government media’ which were supposed to justify my wife’s expulsion from Poland – while ignoring the fact that they had been repeatedly refuted by the courts and deemed unreliable by other European Union countries,” Kramek said.
In an interview with Interia, Maciej Wąsik said that he disagrees with the court’s decision. “I am not ‘convicted’, as the decision was made in civil and defamation proceedings. I do not agree with it and when I get the reasoning, I will appeal for cassation to the Supreme Court. I have an appointment with an attorney in this case,” announced Wąsik.
Another verdict against Maciej Wąsik
This is another final ruling against Maciej Wąsik in recent times. In December – together with Mariusz Kaminski – he was sentenced by the Regional Court in Warsaw. The Law and Justice politician heard a sentence of two years’ imprisonment for abuse of power in the so-called “land scandal”. He spent some time in prison but was ultimately pardoned by President Andrzej Duda and released.
