In June, an enforcement bailiff seized funds from the bank account of Law and Justice (PiS) MEP Maciej Wąsik. As a result, PLN 30,000 was transferred to the account of the Open Dialogue Foundation, following a court judgement. The politician had been ordered to pay compensation to the organisation for violating personal rights.
Bartosz Kramek, Lyudmyla Kozlovska and the organisation they founded, Open Dialogue Foundation, sued Maciej Wąsik after a series of statements he made in 2018–2019 about the Foundation’s activities. The former deputy head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration publicly accused activists criticising the actions of the then government of having ties with Russia and engaging in hybrid activities and money laundering.
The court ruled that the current MEP must publish an official apology in the media and pay PLN 10,000 in compensation to Kramek, Kozlovska and the Foundation itself. Wąsik did not comply with the ruling, so in June an enforcement bailiff seized his account.
Maciej Wąsik held accountable. MEP did not avoid payment
“The money from Maciej Wąsik is in our Foundation’s account,” confirmed Bartosz Kramek. On Thursday, the organisation received a transfer of PLN 27,600. This is the money received from the PiS politician. However, the activists do not intend to stop there.
Next, the Foundation intends to make Maciej Wąsik fulfil the remaining part of the sentence, i.e. to publish an apology in the media outlets specified by the court. The MEP had time to do so until 8 March. “He failed to do this, and as a result, an application for the enforcement of the court judgement has been drawn up and will be submitted to the court,” Kramek said.
The Foundation’s attorney, lawyer Dawid Biernat, filed a motion for the publication of an apology within three days of the court’s decision becoming final, under the penalty of a fine of PLN 5,000 for each day of delay. In total, Wąsik had to pay over PLN 50,000, of which PLN 30,000 was the primary amount, i.e. compensation, over PLN 11,000 was interest, over PLN 7,600 was legal fees, PLN 900 was the cost of representation in enforcement proceedings, and just under PLN 5,000 was the cost of enforcement.
