By decision of Prime Minister Donald Tusk, 379 power generators and 18 heaters from the Government Strategic Reserves Agency (RARS) will be sent to Ukraine in the coming days, the Ministry of the Interior and Administration (MSWiA) has announced. The authorities of Warsaw will also send 90 generators to Kyiv. The first transports are scheduled to depart for Ukrainian cities on Friday.
More than PLN 6 million has already been raised through the online campaign “Warmth from Poland for Kyiv” in just eight days. Over 48,000 people have contributed so far. The fundraiser is organized by the Stand with Ukraine Foundation together with several organizations and social movements, including the Polish Business Roundtable Foundation, the Entrepreneurs Help initiative, and the Polish Red Cross.
The humanitarian situation in Ukraine has become critical as a result of systematic Russian attacks targeting energy and heating infrastructure.
“The situation in Kyiv requires an immediate response. Thermometers in the Ukrainian capital show minus 17 degrees Celsius (…). People are staying in freezing apartments and basements. They wear several layers of clothing to maintain body heat. Above their heads, Russian drones and missiles are flying, deliberately destroying energy infrastructure,” the organizers of the fundraiser report.
Generators for Ukraine
Currently, nearly 60 percent of Kyiv remains without access to electricity, and thousands of households are functioning without heating. In severe frost conditions, this poses a direct threat to the life and health of hundreds of thousands of people.
Industrial generators purchased with funds raised as part of the “Warmth from Poland for Kyiv” campaign are expected to arrive in Kyiv as early as this weekend. They will supply public facilities such as hospitals and schools.
However, this is not the only assistance currently coming from Poland. By decision of Prime Minister Donald Tusk and the leadership of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration, the Government Strategic Reserves Agency has allocated 379 power generators and 18 heaters from its reserves. This is a direct response to the most urgent needs reported by the Ukrainian side. At the same time, the Ministry assured that releasing generators and heaters from Polish reserves does not compromise RARS’s ability to carry out its tasks and ensure national security.
The authorities of Warsaw are also sending 90 generators to Kyiv.
“We all see images from Kyiv of frozen stairwells, hospitals that are no longer functioning, and people leaving the city,” said Rafał Trzaskowski, Mayor of Warsaw. He emphasized “full solidarity” with Poland’s eastern neighbor and expressed “strong opposition to the barbaric actions of the Russians.”
Kyiv Mayor Calls on Residents to Stock Up
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko appealed on Friday for residents who are able to do so to leave the Ukrainian capital. He urged those remaining to stock up on food, water, and medicines. He warned that due to the severe winter and Russian shelling, the situation is difficult and may deteriorate further.
Klitschko also announced that Kyiv has designated heated shelters in every district of the city, where people will be able to take refuge and stay overnight if necessary.
“These points will include sleeping areas equipped with heating devices. Food and hygiene supplies will also be available,” Klitschko said.
According to information released on Friday, 1,940 multi-storey residential buildings in the capital are still without heating.
