The situation in Ukraine’s capital remains extremely difficult. Kyiv continues to live and function amid an energy and heating crisis. Following a massive Russian attack, many residents are still without electricity, and some are also without heating. Outdoor temperatures occasionally drop to -15°C. However, support is possible. As part of the “Warmth from Poland for Kyiv” campaign, 100 power generators and power stations may be delivered to our neighbours.
The Stand With Ukraine Foundation, together with several organisations and civic movements (including the Demokracja Foundation, Sestry.eu, the Open Dialogue Foundation, Euromaidan-Warszawa and the Entrepreneurs Help initiative), with the support of the Polish Business Roundtable Foundation, is organising a fundraiser to assist Kyiv, which is facing extremely difficult wartime and weather conditions. The lack of electricity for approximately 70% of the capital’s residents means being unable to cook a hot meal, drained mobile phones and losing contact with loved ones during attacks.
Fundraiser for Kyiv
“We are organising a fundraiser for a specific purpose — we want to purchase and send 100 power generators and power stations to Kyiv. These devices save lives. A generator allows heating a room where elderly people and children are sheltering. It makes it possible to boil water. It provides light which, in wartime reality, restores at least a sense of security,” reads the fundraiser description.
The initial fundraising target was PLN 400,000, but the campaign became so popular that the goal was first increased to PLN 2 million and has now been raised to PLN 3 million. Every contribution counts — even a few or a dozen złoty. You can find the link to the “Warmth from Poland for Kyiv” fundraiser here.
“The response from Poles exceeded our expectations. You have shown that the fate of your neighbours is not indifferent to you. Thanks to your donations, we can do much more than we originally planned. This money means real warmth for people in Ukraine. We will reach those who are freezing in dark homes and hospitals without electricity. We will purchase more generators, sleeping bags and fuel,” the description states after the fundraising target was increased.
Appeal from the President of Ukraine
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced on Friday that the Ukrainian capital currently has only about half of the electricity it needs due to the most serious energy crisis since the beginning of the war, following Russian attacks on critical infrastructure.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy also spoke about the need for support. During a special meeting devoted to the situation in the energy sector, he announced an acceleration of the process of importing electricity and the necessary equipment for energy production in Ukraine.
“We must accelerate as much as possible the increase in energy imports and additional equipment from our partners,” Zelenskyy wrote on Telegram, summarising the meeting. He added that relevant recommendations were also issued to the Ministry of Defence and the Air Force, responsible for air defence, in case of further Russian attacks.
