Strike and massacre in Zhanaozen
The brutal pacification by the Kazakh authorities of a strike by oil workers resulted in at least 17 workers’ deaths and dozens were injured. The tragedy has become a turning point in the modern history of Kazakhstan. The aftermath of the 2011 Zhanaozen strike saw the introduction of a state of emergency, mass arrests and numerous acts of repression against political oppositionists.
In order to commemorate the tragedy, the zhanaozen.eu website was launched.
