The work of a lawyer in the Eastern European member countries of the Council of Europe is fraught with many risks: murders and attempted assassinations, criminal prosecution, pressure on relatives, illegal searches, attempts to withhold an attorney’s license, and slanderous media campaigns.

On December 13, 2017, MEPs – Ana Gomes, Tunne Kelam, Jaromir Stetina, Indrek Tarand, Kazimierz Michał Ujazdowski, Julie Ward – addressed the Moldovan authorities with regard to the worrisome developments of the state of democracy and the crackdown on civil society taking place in the country.

On the occasion of the OSCE HDIM 2017, the Open Dialogue Foundation held an expert seminar “Human Rights and Political Persecution in Russia, Ukraine, Moldova and Kazakhstan” in Warsaw on 21 September 2017. This discussion was our last side event during HDIM 2017.

Between Tuesday 11 and Wednesday 12 July, 2017, the Open Dialogue Foundation met in Rome with representatives of NGOs and members of the Italian Senate and Chamber of Deputies. The 2-days visit was an opportunity to discuss individual cases of victims of abusive Red Notices.

Against the backdrop of growing public discontent with the current government, the political regime in Moldova is becoming tougher. The powerful oligarch Vladimir Plahotniuc has monopolised the influence on the state authorities and, currently, he controls law enforcement agencies.

Against the backdrop of growing public discontent with the current government, the political regime in Moldova is becoming tougher. Opposition activists and human rights activists increasingly frequently face politically motivated criminal prosecutions.

Mid-December 2016 was a period of intense work on the support of the civil society in Moldova. With a group of its prominent representatives we held series of high-level meetings in the EP as well as PACE to discuss the country’s political and human rights problems.

Notwithstanding its obligations, the Moldovan government has clearly deviated from the democratic course it claims to be following and from its duty to respect, protect and fulfill human rights.

Counsel Ana Ursachi represents the interests of numerous opponents of the powerful oligarch Vladimir Plahotniuc who exerts influence on the judiciary and law enforcement agencies of Moldova and may be involved in her unlawful criminal prosecution.
