As the Open Dialogue Foundation, we would like to thank you for your support during the past year and wish you all the best in your professional and personal life in 2017! On this occasion we would like also to share with you some of the ODF’s top achievements of the year 2016.

Breaking news: France has refused to extradite Mukhtar Ablyazov to Russia and Ukraine. The decision of the French Conseil d’Etat is final. He is going to leave the arrest after 3 years.

Vladimir Kozlov, Kazakh dissident, released from prison last month, after almost five years spent behind bars, wrote a letter to the Open Dialogue Foundation. In the letter, he calls ODF activists his friends and thanks them for their dedication in fighting for his freedom.

Representatives of the Foundation follow and attend the most important sessions and meetings of the international organizations and institutions in Brussels, Strasbourg, Vienna and Geneva.

Geneva 23 June 2016 – On 22 and 23 June 2016 the UNHRC – the body that monitors the implementation of the rights enshrined in the ICCPR – reviewed for the second time since Kazakhstan is a party to the ICCPR the status of civil and political rights in the country.

The well-known Kazakhstan dissident and poet as well as political prisoner Aron Atabek has been behind bars for over six years now. For a number of years, he has been kept in a solitary confinement cell in oneof the most rigid regime prisons of the country.

Human rights and the issue of their observance have become the subject of the conference, which was held in the Senate on 16 December, 2013. The conference was organised by the Legislative Committee and the Human Rights, the Rule of Law and Petitions Committee.

Presentation of the annual ‘Freedom’ awards was not held as a result of obstacles being put in place by the authorities. The Kazakh Prosecutor’s Office stated that the event is associated with the banned political party ‘Alga!’ and is therefore illegal.

The prosecution did not have sufficient evidence to prove Askar Moldashev’s guilt; he had previously faced charges of drug possession. During the trial, gross procedural irregularities and inconsistencies in the evidence were revealed.
