The famous Kazakh dissident and poet, Aron Atabek was transferred to a detention facility in Pavlodar, where he was held under intolerable conditions. For his attempts to defend his rights, he was placed in solitary confinement as a “deliberate violator”.

Convicted lawyer Andrey Derkunskiy, who allegedly had evidence to prove his innocence, was found dead in his cell on 22 January, 2014. The cellmate of the deceased, Daniar Tolendinov reported that he had witnessed the authorities of the detention facility cooperating with the murderers.
